Vegan Education and Activism

We grow up in a profoundly disconnected culture. The disconnect between the food on our plates and its origin is a perfect example. Our collective ill-treatment of other animal species may be seen as emblematic of the divorce between the modern world and the natural one of which we are nonetheless an indivisible part, and indeed of a disconnection from our own true nature – our humanity.

Vegan education is all about helping others make the connection and wake up to the inescapable reality of appalling violence inherent in all branches of the animal industry, happening all the time on an unimaginable scale. And it’s about showing that there is an alternative in a pure vegetarian (vegan) way of living which happens to be good for us, too.

We’re happy to be a very small part of a massive and ever-growing movement that dares to dream of an end to animal exploitation and suffering. In this journey we free ourselves and move a step closer to bringing about a peaceful world to share with all beings. That’s why we can truly say:

Animal Liberation
=
Human Liberation.

Community life vs. individuality

Have you ever questioned who you truly are? And then i’m not referring to the external layer of your personality! We can all see how one looks and behaves. But don’t we somehow seem to get a bit lost sometimes in it or get too focused on this outside crust of our being. Like we hold on to much to this self-made personality. Some call it ego, the other self etc… but who are you? That was my question… Are we the person we pretend to be? Or is there something deeper in us. I might say i’m a vegan, jumping through life on flip flops catching waves and digging with my hands in the dirt to get a sweet potato out of the ground. Or am I a soul on a sacred journey trapped in a human body to learn about love , light and forgiveness… Probably a bit of both. Somewhere in between. I guess it’s never good to lean too much to one side. Extreme is never a good answer. Unless it’s extreme happiness. : ) So just to tell you that it’s not the best to be to focussed on neither of these sides. There is only one black and one white, but endless shades of grey (so E. L. James who wrote “50 shades of grey” missed out on a few… Good news ladies, there are more to fantasise about :p). But let’s get back on track here… and yet we tend to hold on so much to our shade we choose to be the only true one.

But we cannot blame ourselves. We grew up in a society where individuality became so important that it started to dominate us. So we just became a victim in a way. We followed the flow. We didn’t know any better. Everybody does it, so do I. “Individuality is important”, they all say. “I have the right to work on my personal growth”, would another reply. And sure they have that right. I’m the first to support people in their growth… But is working on that external layer of what you call personality really growing as a soul?? And are we sometimes not confusing growth of the soul with attention to the ego? Coming to my point, this is a very important topic if we think community style. I think that here we have to make a sort of quantum leap. Change your way of thinking. Put the focus on the bigger picture. If one is to focused on it’s personal growth and focused on his own, he or she will not fit in the wholeness of community life. It’s of course finding the balance between the two extremities. Blend a few shades of grey together.

We all have our believes, our vision, our habits and history. We were given different values throughout our childhood. Each got influenced by another culture and another peer group. And all of that made you the the beautiful person you are now. Your personality has been formed from birth till today. How you will continue to form and reshape your personality is determent by your dreams and hopes… And I hope they are magnificent, sustainable and will flower nothing but good memories. So yeah, you are you and I am me, all with completely different backgrounds and emotional baggage and yet… we all have something in common. That big dream to create something were the future generation can look up to. Something they can enjoy, live for and continue to create with their wisdom, as they will be wiser than we will ever be… The future will look bright, if we unite and create a solid base for them to grow on now. And that’s why we all need to join forces. That is why it’s the perfect time for Vegoa to rise and lead more people into a sustainable and ethical way of living. If not now, WHEN???

All around the world communities are rising like mushrooms out of the ground. More and more people have figured out that just being a little dot of paint on the wall isn’t what they want to be. They want to be a piece of art themselves. And damn right they are! You are all divine, once you believe you are. Once you’ve just got hold on a grasp of your full potential, you’ll find a way to grow. Even if its with baby steps.. But you will grow!! Your inner self will grow, not your ego and with inner growth comes happiness. A form of happiness that money can’t buy. If we pull on the same side, we can attract anything we want. But to realise a project of this size as Vegoa is, one needs to sometimes put aside his personal shade of grey and blend in with the shade of his fellow neighbours. Personal conflict is the bigger topic why communities fail. People disagree about a certain subject and keep their point of view without considering meeting somewhere in the middle. And believe it or not. That is what we call ego. I’m right and you are not!! What I learned already, wandering this planet, is that there are endless possibilities of right… Easy like Sunday morning, right? Just find a ‘right’ that suites both of you. Mix dark grey with light grey and come up with darklight grey…

If we want to contribute to make the change possible, we have to decide what we see as a priority: Defending our own personal believes or the ones that might one day save the world… Tolerance, Modesty, Unity, Flexibility Coherence, , … they are all beautiful words.

But they are even more beautiful if we truly put them in practice… Think, Talk, Act… and do it positive.

New Year Resolutions

It passes by as quick as turning over the page of a book. 23.59 becomes 0.00 and suddenly we find ourselves in a new year. 2017 stands already strong with its roots deeply tangled in the endings of 2016, ready to become a beautiful year. At least that’s what I have to believe when I read peoples new year resolutions that they all spread proudly over their personal walls and social media.
If half of the things being said come true, i think we finally have our world peace :).

I didn’t make any this year. So many people asked me though “So Bart, what are you gonna do different this year?”… Maybe just smile at least one smile more than last year :). Help at least one more soul than last year. Thing is: If every day you try to be the best you you can possibly be, you don’t need new year resolution. you are a new year resolution for humanity itself.

The big change that this magical year will bring for me and some new friends I made here in the south of Portugal, is to continue creating this groundbreaking project where we all feel so blessed to be part of. 2017 will be the year VEGOA will grow from baby to toddler. A part in its growth where it will gain trust, explore and see more possibilities. It wants to grow. It wants to learn, it wants to expand… and so that’s how it will go…

I always had optimism as a close friend of mine. But last year we became even closer. For every problem there is a solution, that feeling is now even stronger. Through every thorny forest you can create a path. You might get some scars doing it, but all scars heal and in the end you created a path where other people can safely walk on to follow you in your footsteps… We need people with guts, those who just say “Come on, people… Let’s go for it”. In Disney’s Lion King they call it “the leap of faith, the band of hope” :p Hakuna Matata!!! Lets create something new, something that so many people are waiting for to happen, but maybe too afraid to try. That’s one of the beauties of VEGOA. We are those who don’t hesitate to get into those thorn bushes and create a path. We know there is a more sustainable way of living possible and if we unite we can create whatever we desire. The true power is within ourselves.

So yeah, 2017!! Bring it on… I’m ready for it. I’ll make it the best year I ever had so far. Cause I know I’m doing the right thing. I’m helping to make this little part of the universe we call earth a better place. That modest, beautiful sphere that was so perfectly in balance till humanity happened and acted as a disease… And I can only hope more people will be inspired by us doing so and will support or join VEGOA project. Or other projects. Or just make some changes yourself… How can you be a more loving person? How can you contribute to make your neighbourhood a more balanced place? Simple, you just do… BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE IN THE WORLD…

Hope to see you around VEGAN HILLS in stunning Algarve. I wish you beauty and balance for the next year, but mainly for now, cause now is when magic can happen…

We are getting close!

 logowp

As you know we are getting close to the 22nd of August and that is the day when our joining process will change. After the deadline we will have to consider using other resources like our private savings and loans. As a result, the price to join the project will go up a bit as we will have to pay interest rate for the loans.

Vegoans paid all the deposits for the land. This means that there is only the final payment ahead of us.

We took the risk, so you can now join without fear of loosing your savings.

We will transfer your money back in case we don’t reach the final amount. If you change your mind when the land has been bought, you can always sell your share to other interested Vegoans.

You can still book a visit before the 22nd of August.
This might be your last chance to be part of this life-changing project!

CALL TO ACTION

vegoa-food-not-bombs

what do we want?
vegan action
when do we want?
now!

VEGAN HILLS is looking for activists!
We need people full of hope, with courage to step off the system and stand up for better future.
People who see the potential of this project. Who dreamed about being part of change. There is no more time to keep spending life in economic slavery. The devastation that people are leaving behind is shocking. Its a biggest shame, biggest failure that we as human mankind could do. It is so wrong on so many levels that there is no day that I am not thinking about it. There is no way of opening eyes every day and not seeing its consequences. The condition of Earth is a disaster. Nature is disappearing in front of us. Animals are struggling. Humans are struggling. And we all are guilty. I know it is hard to be enthusiastic in these days, but people, please wake up. There is a hope, there are solutions, there is a way for better future. Together we can make a change, we can push the law, we can have massive positive impact. If we succeed, the next vegan community will succeed, and then next one and next one and so on.
The fear has to go away. Fear is just in our heads, we need to get rid of it. There is no more time to waste.
We are not looking for an easy life, we want to change the world, we want to establish first vegan village. This project is not about escapism, its about fighting for better tomorrow for all living beings and future generations. There is a deep meaning behind it that some don’t understand. Living in harmony with nature and fighting against exploitation of animals needs to be promoted, needs to be encouraged, educated, shared and needs people doing it and it has to be done now.
We have one of a time chance to spend life on this planet. One chance. It so easy to forget about it.
If you are reading this, if you are following the project from some time and feel like my words are directed to you, you are ready to commit to the project but are still hesitating,
we are waiting for you!

Why do eco-villages struggle?

I get asked frequently what will people live off when living in Vegoa; I want to answer that question by explaining why Vegoa is different from any other eco-community project.

Vegoa was deeply thought to be a minimal system that gives people the maximum freedom so they can focus on their passions and activism; in most ecovillages there is a centralised decision making process that approves or disapproves initiatives, at Vegoa there is no central committee or long voting system by people that don’t understand what you are proposing.

It’s easy to think that we need a central voting system, a leader or an elected representative because is easy to understand, but that never worked before so why should we create a new community with the same old controlling systems?

When studying other ecovillages and communities we noticed a pattern of disappointment with how priorities are decided and how people feel they have to trade their freedom for living in community, specially when communities get bigger.

None of us wanted to trade freedom for anything else, the same way we fight for animal freedom we fight for human freedom.

So how do we give freedom to everyone and still know what our priorities are?

Well we just let people decide in what they want to work, we do that by joining working groups that we call Organisations, Vegoans join the groups they feel they have knowledge to help with and have passion for. For example, I joined the “Vegoa Communications” because I have professional experience with communication and like to do it, I was not forced and can stop at any time. I can start my own organisations as well, I plan to work in a building organisation to help everyone building their houses and share the techniques with the world.

Another question we get regularly is: What about if someone does nothing?

When I help people building they can pay me with Vegoa coin “Vegetas” that they receive every month even if they don’t work. And now you are thinking that it makes even less sense because everyone receives free money.

When we give everyone a basic income we are guaranteeing people have more financial freedom to risk in new initiatives without prioritising money, they can sell their products and services cheaper to the community because the community gives them a basic income.

It’s easy to think that people will not work if they get free money, but is not that the beginning of a society where money is not needed? Why do we tend to think about the worst of humans instead of the best?

If we see Vegetas as a voting tool where people give their vegetas to the Organisations that have the best initiatives in the community so they improve their services or products then you can understand that Vegoa is more democratic and fair than a commune.

Organisations at Vegoa are not for profit, so people will not be working to make money, they will be working because they love what they do or they want to help the community, Vegoans can then reward those people by giving them their vegetas.

Vegoans can as well trade with the outside world with Euros and save enough to travel or other services that they may need from the outside world.

At Vegan Hills, our first village, we will have several organisations offering services to the outside world; for example we will have a Health Retreat with several activities where vegoans can work if they need euros, I plan as well to help people outside the community building sustainable housing.

We want to be 100% self-sustainable and want to produce everything within Vegoa but we are not naive thinking it will be easy, we know it will take a long time; we want to start by being energy and food self-sustainable. Using Vegetas is easy for us to know what products are produced 100% in the village because we will only be able to sell those products in Vegetas or otherwise someone will be losing euros.

The reason it sounds complicated is because we tend to compare it with our existing system and my explanation does the same, for that reason I want to explain again in a very simple sentence:

Vegoans have the social and financially freedom to start any initiatives with other Vegoans as long as it respects the Vegoa Manifest.

Ecovillages struggle because they don’t have freedom, they need to decide everything in group and the majority forces people into decisions that are not theirs, this results in members leaving or being constantly blocked.
Vegoa will grow to be a big community once we start with our initial project “Vegan Hills”. You can join us now to be part of this amazing project.
